Awards for outstanding players in South Africa

 

 

The 2015 SANEA / SANEDI Energy Awards were made to eleven companies and individuals for their outstanding contributions to South Africa’s economy. The awards are a result of member committee South African National Energy Association, SANEA, and the South African National Development Institute, SANEDI, joining forces to promote achievements by South Africans to ensure a sustainable energy future.

At the awards ceremony, hosted on 17 September 2015 in Johannesburg, Brian A. Statham, SANEA Chair, said: “It is important for all of us to stretch the boundaries. If South Africa is to be recognised as a leading nation we have to go beyond the range of normal expectations.  Through exceptional performance we can demonstrate what is possible; we can set the standard for a new reality that will deliver the social and economic development necessary for South Africans to enjoy a great future.

“We have to do this every day; at work and at play.  Those who are being recognised tonight have embarked on this journey.  They have set the benchmark for a new reality.  They are an inspiration to us all.  We acknowledge and salute their efforts in the belief that their achievements will inspire others."

 

2015 SANEA / SANEDI Energy Awards

Top SANEA Award: went to Sipho Nkosi, Chief Executive Officer of Exxaro Resources and President of Chamber of Mines of South Africa. Sipho won the award for his clear demonstration of leadership, innovation, initiative and visionary qualities. The SANEA / SANEDI board recognizes Sipho Nkosi as an outstanding role model, who has made a significant contribution in South Africa. He has served, and continues to serve, on a number of Boards of Companies and NGO’s including the SANEA Board. The award paid tribute to his leadership, experience and wisdom and his passion about development of the South African energy sector.

SANEA Energy Project: went to Bio2Watt (Pty) Ltd for its introduction of the first industrial scale waste to energy biogas plant (4.4 MW) to South Africa via its “Bronkhorstspruit Biogas Plant”.  The SANEA / SANEDI board paid tribute to the innovative character of the project by introducing new ideas to the South African Energy Sector. 

SANEA Energy Project: Mitochondria Energy Company (Pty) Ltd received the award for the first commercial fuel cell installation in South Africa. The project was a joint vision by the Chamber and Mitochondria Energy to demonstrate a technology that holds tremendous promise for the supply of distributed clean energy as well as to beneficiate South Africa's platinum resource endowment.

SANEA Energy Project: Stellenbosch Municipality received an award for providing electricity to residents in one of the informal settlements, Enkanini. The municipality could not provide these residents with on-grid electricity in the near future, and decided that the provision of solar energy could be a viable alternative to conventional electricity.

SANEA Education Award: Liz Hart, Siyenza Management received the award for consistently delivering improved knowledge and understanding of the energy issues affecting the African continent as part of her work for the Africa Energy Indaba, the World Energy Councils regional event in Africa, held every year in February.

SANEA Education Award: Journal of Energy in Southern Africa (JESA) received the award for providing the benchmark for energy research in Southern Africa and the only peer-reviewed energy journal on the African continent.

SANEA Highly Commended Award: Journal of Energy in Southern Africa (JESA), a peer-reviewed energy journal and the flagship publication of the Energy Research Centre (ERC), University of Cape Town.

SANEA Journalism Awards: went to Terence Creamer, Creamer Media to providing accessible and current insights in the energy field in South Africa. The award also went to Richard Drummond, Energy Management News for providing a venue for the dissemination of energy information and news items of local, regional and international interest.

SANEDI RECORD RENEWABLE ENERGY RESEARCH EXCELLENCE (RERE) AWARDS 2015

Mike Aldous of Mott MacDonald PDNA received an award for his work on the new head office project for the South African Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA), a ground-breaking project that sets a new benchmark for the country's government and commercial building sectors. The project was developed as a public private partnership (PPP), and it has leveraged the cooperative structure of the PPP model to achieve best possible outcomes.

SANEDI RECORD RERE YOUNG RESEARCHER AWARD 2015

Johan Stander, Stellenbosch University received this award for his contribution to the advancement of wind energy technologies which attracted interests from large international players such as Fraunhofer IWES, Enercon, and LM blades.
