Five new nationally based Future Energy Leaders groups were formed in 2015 in Austria, Egypt, New Zealand, Nigeria and Zimbabwe, with one in development in South Africa. Pirjo Jantunen, FEL Chair, said: “I welcome all the new national FEL groups to our community which will complement our global FEL-100s and look forward to meeting everyone at the World Energy Congress in October where there will many opportunities to exchange experiences.”

Reminder: deadline for call for nominations to the FEL-100 group is 25 February.

A short update on what the five new groups in the various countries have done so far:

  • Austria: had their first meeting in October to discuss their programme for 2016 with one of their key aims being to network.
  • Zimbabwe: “Youth in Energy” was the theme of their first meeting which was held during Zimbabwe’s Clean Energy Week at the end of September.
  • Nigeria: their group has been active since July with an exciting programme that includes a proposal for a paper entitled ‘The study of perception of youth on energy poverty in Nigeria’.
  • Egypt: launched their group in March and are holding regular meetings and seminars on the challenges facing the energy industry.
  • New Zealand: set up a group in February and are regularly in contact with each other discussing energy issues that affect New Zealand as well global issues.
