Index 2.0 work stream launched

 

 

The 2015 Energy Trilemma Index report is finalised and will be launched on 11 November.  Now work has begun on the development of the 2016 Energy Trilemma Index.

The 2016 Index – also referred to as ‘Index 2.0’ – will bring about a carefully reviewed and revised methodology. An Index 2.0 expert taskforce met in London on 3 September 2015 to kick start the work of this important development phase.

Tasked to further improve the Index’s robustness as well as its usefulness as a tool for decision makers in the energy sector, experts from across regions and the energy sector discussed how to more effectively assess countries’ efforts and performance in meeting the energy trilemma goals. Also a matter of discussion was how to better structure the individual Index dimensions, where to add, remove or replace indicators, and where to change data sources or consider developing own data sets.

The Index, which has been produced by the Council, in partnership with global consultancy Oliver Wyman since 2010, ranks 130 countries’ on three dimensions of the energy trilemma – energy security, energy equity and environmental sustainability.

Developed to be a comparative assessment tool for public and private stakeholders, it measures overall performance and awards countries with a balance score. This score highlights the trade-offs that exist within the energy trilemma, pointing to key areas where countries must focus on to develop a balanced energy profile and minimise the uncertainties and risks associated with an unbalanced approach.

Index 2.0 will be launched at the 23rd World Energy Congress in Istanbul, Turkey next year.
