St Petersburg 6 October 2015: Gazprom is the latest member to join the new Global Gas Centre officially launched at the St Petersburg International Gas Forum. The Centre has been established to bring together senior leaders in the sector in order to provide a better understanding of the role that natural gas plays in the energy mix.

The World Energy Council, which represents 3000 members from governments, private and state corporations, academia, NGOs and energy-related stakeholders, will act as host to the Global Gas Centre. The Centre has been established by founding members Swissgas, ENGIE and OMV and is already attracting additional companies such as the Belgian company Fluxys and the National Iranian Gas Company.

René Bautz, Chair of the Global Gas Centre and Chief Executive Officer of Gaznat SA, said:   “At a time of critical transition in the gas sector it is increasingly important for leading players to come together. New dynamics in the energy sector mean that we can no longer think of just one technology operating in isolation. The Global Gas Centre will help break down traditional barriers to ensure that the sector can play its full part in achieving a low carbon economy.”

At the launch, a roundtable of 35 top industry leaders from around the world was held where Christoph Frei, Secretary General of the World Energy Council, said: “The launch of the Global Gas Centre just before COP21 could not come at a better time as the whole energy sector is looking to embrace the new frontiers on the long road from Paris. The gas industry is a driving force in the global economy, and collaboration is needed on new energy infrastructure projects where gas can play an important role. The Global Gas Centre will work with the World Energy Council and help inform our work as we come to terms with the new reality in the energy sector.”
