The 2017 St. Petersburg International Economic Forum hosted the signing of an agreement between the World Energy Council and The State Atomic Energy Corporation (ROSATOM), to officially welcome Rosatom as the Council’s latest Patron.

The document was signed by World Energy Council Secretary General, Dr Christoph Frei, and Rosatom’s First Deputy Director General for Corporate Development and International Business, Kirill Komarov.

The World Energy Council’s Patronage program aims to engage leading energy companies in joint research on key energy issues impacting the future development of the energy system.

With recognised expertise in nuclear energy, Rosatom will provide valuable insights into the work of the World Energy Council and will inform the Council’s various thematic activities at an international and regional level. As part of the agreement, Rosatom will also be joining a number of the Council’s national member committees in countries of key interest for the organisation.

Mr Komarov commented:

“I hope that this cooperation between us and the World Energy Council, signified by the signing of this Agreement, will allow us to draw the attention of the members of the Council to the value of nuclear energy, which we regard as one of the key components of the global "green" energy of the future”.

The Council was also pleased to welcome Rosseti as a new patron in May. It is one of the largest power companies in the world and the main operator of energy networks in Russia. It is also one of the leading companies in the Russian market in introducing innovative technologies to the main and distribution grid complex.

“We are delighted to see Rosatom and Rosseti join as the World Energy Council’s latest Patrons. The energy sector is facing many new realities in the way we produce and consume energy. The context for countries and companies has never been more exciting as we look to shape the future of the energy sector. We look forward to working with all our partners and members in 100 countries to deepen our understanding of the grand energy transition,” said Dr Christopher Frei.

Rosatom is a Russian publicly-owned corporation, which is the leader in the global nuclear technologies market. It brings together over 300 enterprises and organisations, including the world's only nuclear icebreaker fleet. The company is tasked with implementing uniform state policy on the uses of atomic energy as well as fulfilling the Russian Federation’s international obligations on the peaceful uses of atomic energy. Rosatom has been a member of the World Energy Council’s Russian National Committee since 2012.
