Vietnam has become the Council’s 3rd direct member at a time of increased activity within the South-East Asia region, ahead of the Council’s Asia Regional meeting held on 22 June. Key discussions centred on energy resilience within the region, the effect of gas market formation in Asia and new US energy policy.
VGEN is new organisation established in November 2016 under the Vietnam Energy Association, which has a close relationship with the Vietnamese government. Key energy companies such as VietNam Electricity (EVN), are members of the Association. EVN is the largest power company in Vietnam having an installed electricity generation capacity of 23,579 MW and a transmission network of 21,883 kilometres (13,597 mi). According to a UNDP report on the 100 largest enterprises in Vietnam, EVN came in at 3rd position after Agribank and VNPT.
VGEN are currently in the process of developing and launching their organisation, and one of their main missions is to become a full member of the Council and create a wider link with the international energy community.
Organisations in countries where the Council does not yet have an active member committee, can join under a direct membership. This is an engagement process for individual companies or organisations that provides them with access to the World Energy Council’s network, work programme and events.
