SEOUL/LONDON, July 31, 2013 — The World Energy Council today announced the winners of the “Tomorrow’s Energy Prize” for the most outstanding papers to be presented at the 2013 World Energy Congress in Daegu, South Korea from October 13 to 17, 2013.

It is the first time that this prize, which carries an award of US$10,000 for each winning paper, has been presented in association with the World Energy Congress. It is being sponsored by the Daesung Group, a leading Korean energy company.

This year’s jury of judges included leading representatives from the World Energy Council, the Organizing Committee of the World Energy Congress, and the Daesung Group. A total of 346 papers from 49 countries were submitted on topics related to the Congress theme of “Securing Tomorrow’s Energy Today”.

The four category prize winners, hailing from Russia, Thailand, Mexico and China, are:

Exploring World Energy Scenarios: Dr Tatiana Mitrova, Head of the Oil and Gas Department at the Energy Research Center of the Russian Academy of Science. Paper topic: “The Global Outlook Until 2040: The Potential Impact of the Shale Oil and Gas Technological Breakthrough on the Liquid Fuel and Gas Markets”.
Assessing the Energy Trilemma: Ms Supanida Wongsomboon, Senior Accountant, Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand. Paper title: “EGAT 07: The Impact of Renewable Energy on Electricity Tariffs”.
Improving Energy Access: Mr Omar Ramirez, Head of Business Development, Arteche Mexico. Paper title: “New Single Phase Substations as a Real Option for Rural Electrification”.
Promoting Energy and Urban Innovation: Ms Rui Zhang,Chief Engineer, Shanghai Solar Energy Research Center. Paper title: “Study on Thermal Performance of Photovoltaic Glass Curtain Walls”,.

In addition, prizes worth US$2,500 each are being awarded to seven papers that were deemed to have special merit on the following topics:

Exploring World Energy Scenarios: Dr Andreas Wiese, Executive Director, Lahmeyer International. Paper title: “The German Energiewende: A Model for Other Countries?”
Surveying World Energy Resources and Technology: Dr Nicolas Vortmeyer, Head of the Technology Development Lab, Siemens. Paper topic: “Post-combustion Carbon Capture – Leading Mature Technology for Decarbonization of Fossil Power Generation”.
Surveying World Energy Resources and Technology: Ms Noelia Chimale, Professor, Instituto Technologico de Buenos Aires. Paper topic: “Shale Gas Development in Argentina: A Change to the Traditional ENP Business Strategy”.
Surveying World Energy Resources and Technology: Mr Jair Maues, Consultant, Petrobras. Paper topic: “Harvesting Bioelectricity Production in Brazil”.
Surveying World Energy Resources and Technology: Dr Seo In-yong, General Manager, KEPCO. Paper topic: “Financial Impacts of Energy Efficiency Resource Standards on the Korean National Electricity Market”.
Assessing the Energy Trilemma: Mr Norihisa Sakurai, Senior Economist, CRIEPI. Paper topic: “Socio-economic Impacts of the Nuclear Power Plant Shutdown in Japan: Simulation Analysis with the CRIEPI Econometric Models”.
Improving Energy Access: Mr Yusuf Mohammad Ganda, Assistant Chief Technical Officer, Sokoto Energy Research Centre, Usmanu Danfodio University. Paper topic: “The Role of Renewable Energy for Energy Access in Nigeria”.

In addition, a total of 155 paper authors have been invited to attend the Congress and present their papers at the Expert Forum session. The prize winners will receive their awards from Younghoon David Kim, Chairman of the Daesung Group and Co-chair of both the Congress Organizing Committee and the World Energy Council, at the Congress closing ceremony on October 17.

The global response has been heartening and picking the winners was a difficult process. It is noteworthy that nearly 60 per cent of the papers were submitted from Asia, including many from China, which underscores the reach and importance of the World Energy Council. I look forward to seeing the Tomorrow’s Energy Prize becoming a respected global award that highlights the best in energy research and analysis.”

Christoph Frei, Secretary General of the World Energy Council, added:

“These excellent papers provide a very timely insight into some of the most pressing energy issues facing the world. They also underline the very considerable talent within our industry, providing us with a strong platform from which to identify new, innovative and sustainable means of securing our energy future. I’m looking forward to engaging with these thought leaders when they present their findings to the Congress in October.”

The World Energy Congress takes place over 13–17 October 2013 at the EXCO Exhibition & Convention Center in Daegu, South Korea.
