National Grid owns and runs energy networks in the UK and north-eastern US, delivering power and gas safely to millions of customers. The company joins the WEC’s community of Global Partners with the intention to work and share experiences with existing partners in addressing the ‘trilemma’ of challenges that currently face the energy sector – affordability, security of supply, and environmental sustainability.
Dr Christoph Frei, Secretary General of the World Energy Council, commented: “We are delighted to welcome UK’s leading electricity transmission and natural gas distribution company into our Global Partners community. The WEC’s Global Partners represent some of the world’s most forward-thinking energy companies, and their insights and experience are immensely valuable for our global and regional debates. We look forward to working closely with National Grid to enable sustainable energy for the greatest benefit of all.”
Steve Holliday, CEO of National Grid, said: “We are looking forward to joining WEC’s Global Partner programme, at an exciting time for the global energy sector. We are working in a field that faces unprecedented change, so I look forward to working with WEC and their existing network to learn and share our experiences of delivering sustainable energy systems.”
Established in 2009, the WEC’s Global Partners programme provides innovative energy and energy-related companies with immediate global visibility by connecting them to the WEC’s more than 90 national committees, encompassing over 3000 member organisations from public and private sectors.

About the World Energy Council
The World Energy Council (WEC) is the principal impartial network of leaders and practitioners promoting an affordable, stable and environmentally sensitive energy system for the greatest benefit of all.
Formed in 1923, WEC is the UN-accredited global energy body, representing the entire energy spectrum, with more than 3000 member organisations located in over 90 countries and drawn from governments, private and state corporations, academia, NGOs and energy-related stakeholders.
WEC informs global, regional and national energy strategies by hosting high-level events, publishing authoritative studies, and working through its extensive member network to facilitate the world’s energy policy dialogue.
The WEC’s triennial World Energy Congress has gained recognition since the first event in 1924 as the premier global forum for leaders and thinkers to debate solutions to energy issues. The last Congress in Daegu, Korea, gathered more than 7500 participants from 123 countries including 52 ministers and 270 speakers.
